Simone Bailly is a Canadian actress born in Calgary, Alberta, who portrayed Shona in "Daybreak, Part I" and "Daybreak, Part II,"[external 1][external 2] the two-part series finale of Battlestar Galactica directed by Michael Rymer.[external 3] A dual citizen of the United States and Canada, she has lived between Los Angeles and her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia.[external 4]
Career
Bailly grew up influenced by her jazz musician grandfather; she took piano lessons as a child and sang in a jazz choir that performed in hotels, an early musical background that later led her to join a hip hop/funk/jazz band, recording and performing on tour and at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.[external 5] She applied to competitive, audition-only university acting programs, was accepted to two — York University and the University of British Columbia — completing her first year at York before transferring to UBC.[commentary 1] She graduated with honors from UBC's Bachelor of Fine Arts acting program, one of three women to complete the program that year, training under Shakespeare specialist Neil Freeman.[external 6]
After graduation, Bailly backpacked through Europe and then traveled to Toronto to audition for a Shakespeare company, landing the lead role and touring with the troupe for several months across two productions, performing for audiences of up to four thousand.[commentary 2] She subsequently relocated to Montreal, where she performed additional professional theater before transitioning to film and television.[external 7]
Her television career spans science fiction, drama, and action across Canadian and American productions. She holds a series regular role as Constable Jan Ferris — the reckless leader of a gang of corrupt police officers, a character based on real events — on Da Vinci's City Hall (also known as Da Vinci's Inquest), a part that began as a single episode and expanded into a recurring role after series creator Chris Haddock responded to her performance.[external 8] To prepare, she rode with police officers through Vancouver neighborhoods, gaining firsthand exposure to police work, and received additional tactical and firearms training.[external 9] The role became her most recognized work among Canadian audiences.[commentary 3]
On Stargate SG-1, Bailly played the recurring role of Ka'lel, a Jaffa warrior who joins the Hak'tyl Resistance, across Seasons 7, 8, and 9 (2003–2006), eventually ascending to a seat on the Jaffa High Council on Dakara.[external 10] She described the character's evolution from a low-ranking warrior to a position of political power as personally meaningful.[commentary 4] Her Stargate work brought her into scenes with Richard Dean Anderson, Christopher Judge, Lou Gossett Jr., and Tony Amendola, and introduced her to director and actor Peter DeLuise, with whom she later co-starred in the short comedic film noir The Bar.[external 11] She also appeared uncredited as Sgt. Lincoln in the Stargate Universe episode "Twin Destinies" (2011).[external 12]
On Showtime's The L Word, Bailly appeared as Grace, an intern for OurChart who develops a relationship with the transgender character Max Sweeney, in Seasons 4 and 5 (2007–2008), working alongside Jennifer Beals, Pam Grier, and Marlee Matlin.[external 13][external 14] On Smallville, she guest-starred as Star in the Season 6 Valentine's Day episode "Crimson."[external 15]
Among her feature film credits are I Spy (2002), Good Luck Chuck (2007), and Life Partners (2014).[external 16] More recent television appearances include a guest role as Navy Lieutenant Shannon James in the Season 7 finale of NCIS: Los Angeles (2016), a guest role as Brandy Jo Hawkins on Limitless (CBS), and a guest appearance as Jessica Wong in Blood & Treasure (CBS/Amazon Prime).[external 17] She also appeared in the DC series Dead Boy Detectives on Netflix/HBO and in the CBS/Paramount+ television film Must Love Christmas, directed by Martin Wood.[external 18]
Video game work
Bailly is also recognized by video game audiences for her role as Officer Turf — Sergeant Cross's partner — in the EA racing game Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005), which sold over 16 million copies worldwide.[external 19][external 20] In 2021 she produced and hosted a reunion episode of The Simone Bailly Show on YouTube, bringing together cast members from the game to discuss the production.[external 21]
Personal life
Bailly was married to television writer, director, and producer Stephen Scaia from April 2011; the couple later divorced.[external 22][external 23] Scaia, the co-creator and showrunner of Blood & Treasure, also wrote on Limitless and Human Target — two series in which Bailly also appeared.[commentary 5]
Bailly is a certified yoga instructor and a PADI-certified open water scuba diver.[external 24] She is also a painter and a DJ, and launched The Simone Bailly Show, a YouTube interview series featuring fellow screen artists including Tahmoh Penikett and Kandyse McClure among her guests.[external 25] In 2022, she was honored with an award for outstanding contribution to the Vancouver Chinese Film Festival and served as an honorary guest speaker and film judge at the event.[external 26] She has attended science fiction conventions internationally, including Gatecon in Vancouver and FedCon in Germany, where she appeared alongside cast members from the Stargate and Star Trek franchises.[external 27] Bailly was also selected as a member of the Acting Ensemble for the Women in the Director's Chair (WIDC) program, a Canadian non-profit professional development initiative that pairs ACTRA actors with emerging female directors to workshop original scripts.[external 28][external 29]
