The Miniseries Special Issue (also known as the Special Issue or Souvenir Magazine) of the Battlestar Galactica: The Official Magazine is a Titan Magazines publication released in December 2003 covering the Miniseries. This stand-alone publication marked the debut of Titan's official magazine coverage of the Re-imagined Series, appearing alongside the broadcast of the miniseries on the Sci Fi Channel in December 2003.

Publication Details

The Special Issue was released with two different cover variants:

  • Previews Exclusive Edition - Available exclusively at comic specialty shops
  • Standard Edition - Available at newsstands and general retail outlets

Both editions featured the title The Legend Returns! The magazine was 100 pages in full color and retailed for $9.99 USD, a premium price reflecting its special status and increased page count compared to later regular issues.

Coverage

The Special Issue featured comprehensive coverage of the Miniseries production, described as "the best place to get the inside track on this eagerly awaited mini-series." Featured content included:

Behind-the-Scenes Content

  • Director Michael Rymer - Featured article in which Rymer guides readers through the making of the series and discusses the challenges of directing the miniseries
  • Insider information from writers, producers, and directors
  • Exclusive behind-the-scenes access and photography
  • On-set photos and cast portraits
  • Production insights from the Vancouver filming

Notes

  • Previews solicitations for the magazine featured different covers; low quality thumbnails of these were available at the time of writing, and are included for reference. Of note, the call-out title was originally The Quest for Earth Begins, which was later changed to The Legend Returns!

  • This was the first issue of The Official Battlestar Galactica Magazine, though it was not numbered as such. The regular numbered series would begin with Issue 1 in August/September 2005.
  • The publication was timed to coincide with the broadcast of the miniseries on the Sci Fi Channel, which aired December 8-9, 2003.
  • Despite being labeled a "Souvenir Magazine," this issue served as a de facto pilot for what would become the regular magazine series.
  • The miniseries itself attracted 3.9 million viewers for Part 1 and 4.5 million viewers for Part 2, making it the highest-rated miniseries on cable that year and prompting Sci Fi Channel to order a regular series.
  • The near two-year gap between this Special Issue and Issue 1 reflected the time between the miniseries broadcast and the start of regular series production.
  • This issue featured comprehensive coverage of the cast described as "all the main players," focusing on the core ensemble that would carry through to the regular series.
